That night Abe sent a letter to Mr. R, a lawyer in K-City, Kyushu. He had learned the court-appointed lawyer’s name from the newspapers he’d seen. He was requesting, if it were not too much trouble, to borrow for a week the court records relating to the case of the murder. The case was already closed as a result of the defendant’s death, and he hoped that the lawyer would simply acquiesce to his request.

Abe waited for a reply while dealing with the backlog of work at the office. The reply came five days later. It was a simple postcard:

Thank you for your letter. With regard to your request, I am not sure how you intend to use the court records as the case has already closed as a result of the death of the defendant. While I understand from your letter that the intention is not to use it for the purposes of your magazine, I am afraid I am not able to lend the records to you. However, I would like to inform you that a month ago I was approached by a Tokyo-based lawyer named Kinzo Otsuka in regards to this same case, and I lent the records to him. If you wish to learn more details of the case in question, might I suggest that you make inquiries of Mr. Otsuka.
